James N. Green is Professor of Brazilian History and Culture at Brown University and Director of the Brown-Brazil Initiative. He is the author of We Cannot Remain Silent: Opposition to the Brazilian Military Dictatorship in the United States (Duke, 2010) and Beyond Carnival: Male Homosexuality in Twentieth-century Brazil (University of Chicago, 1999). He played a key role in the development of the gay rights movement in Brazil and in political activism during the military dictatorship period.
