US-backed Syrian Forces Advance Toward IS Capital

“In some areas they just retreat, and in other areas they stay to fight… But we have killed dozens of them so far”

Voice of America reporting: Backed by the coalition, an alliance of Kurdish and Arabic fighters, known publically as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), advanced 15 kilometers southward into the area of north of Raqqa, taking control of at least ten villages as U.S.-led coalition airstrikes targeted positions in nearby localities.

“The process is ongoing,” Rojda Judi, a female Kurdish commander who leads the operation on the ground, told VOA. “But the only thing that is slowing us is IS has left so many mines behind. We have to clear off any area before we fully step in.”

The goal is to surround IS forces in the city by simultaneously advancing from several directions, cutting off escape routes in the process.

The Kurdish-led SDF aims to close in on IS by surrounding IS-held territories from different directions, local officials said.

“We are fighting Daesh on three fronts in northern Raqqa,” said Naser Mansoor, a Kurdish official in Syria, using the Arabic name for IS.

“In some areas they [IS] just retreat, and in other areas they stay to fight,” he told VOA via phone from Syria. “But we have killed dozens of them so far.”

US Special forces along with the 1st Attack Unit of YPG and YPJ will be working together to retake Raqaa. With US providing fire power, and probably also satellite pictures and intelligence, it is probable that the Kurdish forces will take over Raqaa fairly quickly (and especially likely that US special forces will be taking an active part and leading the battles in key areas). It should be noted that at the moment the US army is also helping the Kurdish Peshmerga near Mosul in northern Iraq. This essentially means that the Kurds in both Syria and Iraq are receiving active US support. The same support is not extended to the Iraqi army, the Shiite mobilization units or the Syrian Army, all actively fighting ISIS.
