Afghan Taliban leader Mansour 'probably killed' in US air strike

NATO forces are increasingly being deployed in battle zones to support Afghan forces fighting the Taliban.

BBC News reporting: U.S. officials made a statement, which may confirm the death of the Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour.

The operation took place near the town of Ahmad Wal at around 15:00 (10:00 GMT) on Saturday and was authorized by President Barack Obama. Taliban leader was targeted while driving through a remote area of Pakistan with another male combatant, but the Pentagon is still accessing results of this attack.

Mansour assumed the leadership in July 2015, taking place of the Taliban founder and spiritual head Mullah Mohammad Omar.

From the start, he was seen as a wild card with the ability to destabilize already shaky situation in the country even further, due to his appointment as Taliban chief being disputed by a rival group inside the organization, who wanted to select their own leader.

Both Pakistan and Afghanistan were informed about the strike, said a US State Department spokesperson, without clarifying whether the notification was made in advance.

To truly know if the operation was a success we would have to wait for some time. Possibly several years, as was the case with the previous Taliban leader, who passed away in 2013 but was confirmed to be dead by the Taliban only two years later.

Montenegro: end of the one man era?

In modern history, there are few politicians who have remained in power for two decades and most of them shared a ruinous end. Montenegrin PM, Milo Djukanovic, has reigned over the smallest former Yugoslav country (Montenegro) for more than twenty years.
