Police injustice forced black American to seek refuge in Canada.

Kyle Lydell Canty applied for asylum to escape police brutality.

The Huffington Post

He claims that his race made it easier to convict him of minor criminal offences such as jaywalking and assumes that the state refused him due process.

Though he does not think that Canada is free from racist superstitions, he supposes that it still would be advancement. In his words, he has had enough experience of interacting with the police in Canada and they seem to significantly differ from the officers in the United States therefore he supposes it would be much safer for Canty to stay in Canada.

In his opinion, African-Americans are "being exterminated at an alarming rate" in North America and that was the main reason for him to fear for his life.

As an evidence of US police mistreatment he presented to the Immigration and Refugee Board in Canada videos and reports which prove racial discrimination by US police officers which are reported to kill several indefensible people of color. It was disclosed that American asylum applicants are not considered as refugees under UN rules. The IRB did not comment on this issue.

It is not a surprise that North Americans would seek protection by a liberal neighbor but each year not more than 10 U.S citizens are reported to receive Canadian refugee status; in 2015 only two out of 71 applicants were authorized in Canada.

By comparison, Canada detains seven times less people than North America is. Moreover, black people in America are commonly dismissed more harshly than white citizens and are more frequently incarcerated.

Jackie Robinson, the player of Brooklyn Dodgers, was first sent to play in a Canadian city because it would be responsive than any American one.

John Carlos, the owner of bronze medal in track and field, said that Canadian welcome was like a “therapy” for him after his career failure.
