U.S. Embassy warns citizens about 'credible threats' in Turkey

"The U.S. Mission in Turkey would like to inform U.S. citizens that there are credible threats to tourist areas, in particular to public squares and docks in Istanbul and Antalya," the statement read

Katharine Lackey for USA Today reports: the U.S. warned citizens of "credible threats" in tourist areas of Turkey on Saturday, urging people to exercise "extreme caution" if they are near such areas.

In the light of terrible suicide bombings that occurred four times in a row for the four months of 2016, the Administration issued a warning that specifically says public places in Istanbul and Antalya, the areas that were hit the most by terrorists, might be dangerous, especially for the tourists. The bombings have taken place in public recreational areas of resort destinations of Turkey, and the Islamic State has claimed the responsibility of the attacks.

“It comes less than two weeks after the Pentagon ordered families of hundreds of U.S. military members to evacuate southern Turkey amid growing violence in the country,” adds Lackey.  Reporters of Reuters saw a massive police presence with special armed units among them.

Lackey continues: “Recent attacks in Turkey include a Feb. 17 car bomb in the capital, Ankara, that killed at least 30 people, and a suicide bombing March 19 on a popular shopping street in Istanbul that killed five people, including two Americans.”  Moreover, Turkey is still facing multiple security threats from ISIS to Kurdish militants.
