Three for three: Sanders wins Hawaii, Washington, Alaska

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders won the Hawaii Democratic caucus, claiming every state up for grabs in presidential contests

Frederica Shouten for USA Today reports: Sanders trounced front-runner Hillary Clinton in the caucus, holding a double-digit lead, according to USA TODAY's election data page. With 88% of precincts reporting as of 5 a.m. EST, Sanders has 70.6% to Clinton's 29.2%.

"Nobody should have any doubt that this campaign has extraordinary momentum and that we have a path toward victory," Sanders said in a statement. "In state after state, our grassroots effort has taken on the entire political establishment. We have taken on the senators and the governors and the mayors and the members of Congress. Our political revolution is the best chance we have to keep Donald Trump or any other Republican out of the White House.”

At stake were 101 delegates in the Washington state, 16 in Alaska and 25 delegates in Hawaii; Sanders had to fight hard to increase turnout among those young and liberal voters who have already helped him gain polls in earlier caucuses. Moreover, some of his strongest performances came from states where white population was predominant.

"We are making significant inroads in Secretary Clinton's lead, and we have a path toward victory," Sanders told a cheering crowd in Madison, Wis., following his Alaska win. "It is hard for anyone to deny that our campaign has the momentum."

However, the delegate math still favors his rival, Hillary Clinton: like Sanders, she entered the contests with a significant lead among pledged delegates. Moreover, she will experience another grow when superdelegates are added in. She is also anticipated to gain votes in racially diverse states.

“Clinton and her allies already are looking past the nomination fight to the general election and a potential match-up against GOP front-runner Donald Trump, who is engaged an increasingly ugly fight with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for their party’s nomination. On Friday, the two bickered over Cruz’s accusation that Trump planted a tabloid story about Cruz allegedly having extramarital affairs, a charge Trump denied. Cruz called the National Enquirer story “garbage” and “completely false,” continues Shouten.

Pro-Sanders’ Super PAC has collected almost $140 million; Clinton is reserving $70 million to stay afloat during the election cycle, and she has also launched a fundraiser before Sanders’ wins were announced.

“One clear sign that Sanders intends to stick around: On Saturday, he opened a campaign office in Brooklyn — the same New York borough as Clinton’s national headquarters — in preparation for the state's primary,” concludes Shouten.
