Hungarian driver who filmed his lorry swerving at refugees gets fanpage

Even common sense rules can't stop xenophobic anger

Jessica Elgot and Daniel Nolan from The Guardian report: Hungarian driver, who purposely veered his vehicle into a company of people walking and caught it on video, is getting more and more fans among far-right advocates.

It was revealed that after Arpad Levente Jeddi has driven his van into peaceful refugees from Calais camps and has proudly filmed his doings, police complaint against him was filed. However, Jeddi shoot to stardom in his motherland because the video of the incident named “Calais Emigrants vs. Drivers and Europa” was massively favored by extremely right supporters, who defended him on the social media.

A Facebook page, appraising Jeddi, was created and already has attracted a total of more than 18,000 likes for less than a week with his followers actively commenting and fiercely invoking to put the pedal to the metal.

The video, recorder by Jeddi, demonstrated him deliberately driving his large lorry directly towards the group of refugees walking on the hard shoulder. The unfortunate people try to get away from the truck, but the vehicle maneuvers and reaches the group once more. Apparently, no one was hurt and the van was attacked by a glass bottle thrown by one of the immigrants.

Elgot and Nolan cite Jeddi’s statement at his Facebook page: “On what grounds does he [the person who reported the incident] want to ruin the life of a man who was trying to protect his own life from the criminals? I’m going to prove – through the opinion of a road traffic investigator if need be – that there was no dangerous driving. If anything we were being endangered by the mob there. Whom I endanger on the road is not an issue. No one. That place is more like a war zone.”

Slovakian company, for which Jeddi drives a truck, did not seem to react on the issue. Business owner commented that the issue would be investigated once the driver returns back to base. He assured that if Jeddi really used company’s truck to perform the offensive actions, the driver would be definitely reprimanded.

The protest note to the police was filed by Tényi István, a political activist who became renowned for filing other complaints against media and political groups. “Obviously the local authorities are responsible for the safety of people on their motorway, but on the other hand Hungarian authorities are responsible for any offence committed by a driver who is a Hungarian citizen. If a criminal offence has been committed, then this complaint will trigger an investigation, if not then the case will be closed, instead of hanging in the air. There is a possibility that this was rightful self-defence: the Curia [Hungarian high court] ruling 4/2013 clarifies this. To give in to emotions in this case would be highly mistaken. We can only look at what happened here from an objective point of view” Nolan and Elgon quote István.

A Hungarian lawyer admits, that the video clearly demonstrates that the attacked people tried to avoid physical violence which proves, that their lives were endangered by the actions of the driver, so a court cause is highly likely to occur.

Doctors of the World warn that the levels of violence have escalated die to strengthened border control which left refugees only one way to enter the country – in the back of trucks.
